Star Citizen v3.0 is neigh…

Whether it drops here in July or sometime in August, I’m fairly confident we’ll be seeing 3.0 arriving soon.  The hype is immense, but please don’t get too hyped.  It’s going to be nowhere near anything resembling a final release.  This is mostly a major expansion onto the baby-PU that we’ve been flying around in for well over a year now.  Granted, it’s adding in a LOT of exciting tech that CIG feels is mature enough for us to play with and give a proper shakedown: procedural planets, new AI and mission systems, item 2.0, cargo and a vastly expanded “play field”.  The progress of the game continues to accelerate as their tools and get more and more mature and refined.  PU 3.0 is certainly going to be the needed testbed for every profession that will be available in the game and from their roadmap, it appears every point release is designed to add in another major one in.

Will there be a lot of screaming babys that got their hopes up too high with the magic hype of “three-point-oh”, only to be dashed upon release?  Absolutely.  As a programmer, I don’t get my hopes up that high.  The only program I’m happy with is one that’s complete in every major function.  These are called “Betas” though and Star Citizen is far from that as of this writing.  Progress going steady though, I’m sure we’ll get there soon enough.  The technologies they’re creating are beyond exciting to me, as a gamer, as a programmer, and as an IT professional.

So don’t scream and moan if your hype bubble gets popped a bit, because I’m certainly expecting the 3.0 release to be a buggy monster much like 2.0 was on it’s release.  Do expect it to improve though with the point releases and as feedback pours in.  Hopefully soon, before the end of the year, the server systems will be online enough that general instancing will be a reality and we can all just quickly meet each other in game for some real Oddysee training.

Demonseed out.
