Osiris A New Dawn – Alpha Review

Osiris A New Dawn

I cracked under the constant Star Citizen pressure and bought another space simulation/survival game, an early access game called Osiris A New Dawn. I have four friends on Steam who have the game, and who played in much earlier in its development, and it had piqued my interest, since Demonseed Elite described it as a cross between Space Engineers and Ark. It was on sale on Steam so I bit the bullet and spent $20.

And yes, it is early access.

As far as I played so far, there are two moons to explore, but other worlds also listed on the opening map which I assume will be introduced at a later date.

You are asked to create an avatar, and to choose from 4 classes, Scientist or Ranger, Marine or Engineer, customize colors and features, select your stat and your skill points, name it,select the server, then you can start.

The multiplayer is there but the public servers seem sparsely populated. I reamined in single player mode.

The start finds you crash landed on desert sea not far from an island of rock formations and ridges, the visuals are well done and I immediately thought it could be Arrakis, from Frank Herbert’s Dune. Scavenge parts from your ship, head to solid rock and start collecting resources. Water and shelter are your most urgent need.

I will warn you, like Ark,  you need eyes in the back of your head, and the two biggest foes you face are the Skellapods and Crab monsters. I prefer not to restart games if I run into trouble, but in the first 3 hours of gameplay, I had to respawn at LEAST 30 times. Depending on your class, the tools will vary, and even the charge gun you start with lasts only a scant 12 charges.

You have to be determined to carry on, and finally, though various deaths at the claws? tails? Inkvine stuff? I was able to survive 14 days…since the update which added the classes? …well I’ve made it to 2. There is still a lot of work ahead for the developers, but i think they’re going in the right direction, Ark has turned into more of a creature of the week, while the creatures are only a part of the gameplay not all of it.

Truly an alpha, but worth my $20, but no more than that, at least not yet.

I have played only the single player so fat to any degree, so I’ll withhold any harsher judgement till next month.
