The prison was called The Rock. Not the tourist attraction back on earth but a large compound on an asteroid in the Abbruch Sector. The sector was known for its many military facilities and prisons. Breaking out the last surviving leader of the last rebellion brought me to the Rock. The man inside was known as Fin Freiheit, or as most people knew him as the Commander. Freiheit had been a high ranking official in the totalitarian government before he and his group of compatriots tried to take it down. Of course, I heard all of this second hand from various sources throughout the known galaxy and some of the unknown galaxy. I was simply a mercenary and thief for the higher born in the outer reaches of the Ford Galaxy. Regardless of my birth, I was a skilled enough thief to land me this particular job. I drifted towards the Rock in only a space suit to avoid detection. Because of the position of the Rock in the asteroid field, the security guards were lax and a cold object floating towards the station was dismissed as another small rock.
Landing on the small asteroid I crawled to where the air vents for the prison would be. To this day, I still do not understand why air vents and garbage chutes are never guarded. I entered a monotonous hallway with the only thing signaling down was the dim lighting on the roof. On the way to the asteroid field, I had taken the time to memorize the layout of the prison. I walked down the hallway, took a left, went down two flights of stairs. punched a guard, and continued on my way.
From here on in, my job became difficult. I had to keep to the shadows and move without the detection of the complex security systems one would expect to find in a maximum security government prison. I snuck through identical hallways until I found myself at the beginning of the end of my journey. This part of my journey would no longer be sneaking around, but a mad dash to free the Commander and then escape the prison. Turning the corner, I ran up to the first of two identical guards, and slammed my elbow into his chin. Then hopping back, I delivered a swift kick to his head to finish him off. After that I pulled out the gun of the fallen guard from his belt and shot at the other. Three seconds later, the second guard had two holes in his chest and one in his head. By my best guess, I had two minutes now to break out Freiheit. I ran to the I/O panel by the door and typed in the six digit override code. The panel beeped and with a hiss, the door slid open. I walked through to a man leaning against the wall a smug look on his face.
“So they didn’t forget about me. Good work kid. Fin Freiheit is the name,” the man said coolly.
“That’s great to know but we don’t have time for this,” I respond grabbing his arm and pulling him along leaving the cell. I tossed him the gun I acquired and pick up another one off the other corpse. “Take that and follow me. We are headed for the hangars.”
“Woah Kid, who throws a loaded gun with the safety off. I just got out of prison! It would be a shame to die because some inexperienced rookie accidentally got me shot,” The commander yelled at me.
“Don’t celebrate, we’re not out yet,” I retorted.
The most direct course would have been to go up three flights of stairs and down a long corridor. The issue with that route is it would take us right past the barracks. At this point the alarm began to buzz. Instead we went up one flight of stairs and snaked around on that level until we were directly below the hangar.
“Commander can you fly a fighter ship?” I quickly asked.
“Of course I can you dolt. Did they send a moron to rescue me?” he pointedly retorted.
“Good. I will go out first and lead them towards the shuttles. Hop in a fighter and take off. Once you do I will get in another ship and follow you. On my signal, the Justice will enter to pick the two of us up,” I laid out the plan and he nodded along.
At the last sentence his face lights up, “The Justice huh? Maybe Cathy does care about my well being.” He paused a bit and then continued, “Alright let’s go. Oh and don’t get yourself killed. You seem to know what you’re doing.”
“I didn’t plan on it,” I curtly reply. I dashed up the steps and the snuck across the hangar. Once I got to a scout ship, I opened fire on a few of the techs and other soldiers guarding the hangar. I hid behind a large cargo container that gave me plenty of cover. While I took out a few of the soldiers, I ran out of ammunition before I could do any real damage, however, what I had done was good enough because Freiheit had just started a fighter and left the hangar. I signaled to Justice to enter the system to pick the both of us up and dashed into the scout ship. As I hopped into the cockpit, I pushed the button to close the hatch. Flipping switches like a madman I scrambled to start the ship before the soldiers could attempt to board it. Finally the engines hissed and the ship floated off the ground. I immediately left the hangar and then opened a commlink to Freiheit and the Justice, “Alright. I am clear of The Rock.”
“Good work Kid, the Justice just opened her port hangar bay for docking,” Freiheit responded.
“Alright, I am on my way,” I reply with relief.
“Freiheit and Scorch, this is The Justice, welcome aboard,” the comm buzzed as The Justice welcomed us, “We are releasing escorts to take care of your new friends now.”
