//Welcome back//

Welcome back all, and what a welcome back I have to extend out to all of you. This past month has seen some exceptional shifts from you all as members. We’re still a long way off from where I’d like us as a community to be but damn did we make some progress last month.

I do apologize that the Newsletter is late, again. It’s my fault, again. I dare say though, the longer you wait, the sweeter the taste (Or something like that?)

Annnnyway.. with that all said, I’ll be focusing on what transpired in the first ever Community Council.

//A meeting of the minds//

So as part of the initiative to get you all; as people who are part of this great little community to participate and have your voices heard, the administration decided it might be a good idea to try something new. Well for us as Oddysee anyway, to that end we decided to run a community meeting.

The full audio of the meeting can be found through the following link that Demonseed Elite has graciously taken the time to capture and upload for us.: https://old.oddysee.org/october-2016-community-forum-1/  (Disclaimer, it was 5 AM for me, please excuse how absolutely atrocious my articulation was at some points, I’ve learn for next time. Sleep before meetings at 5 am).

To those who couldn’t make the meeting and would like the Cliffs notes following is what we covered during the meeting:

  1. Expansion into other games under the Oddysee Banner, what kind of support should be provided, what kind of limitations should exist
  2. What would it take to become an officer going forward for Oddysee (could we work through both a referral and merit based system?) Candidates will also have to ensure that they fit the Oddysee Moral compass ontop of these pre-requisites.
  3. Thoughts of the current state of the Group and suggestions to improve
  4. What would it take for you as members to engage with the group more, what makes you happy?
  5. What is Oddysee missing to make it your main go to group?

(Click the corresponding tabs below against the topics above for the outcomes of the discussion)

Expansion into other games under the Oddysee Banner

Surprisingly this particular topic received the inverse of what I personally expected, with a lot of you taking the stance rather than expanding into other games, we should be coming back in and focussing on particular games. In particular, Oddysee should maintain a core game in each ‘genre’ rather than spreading ourselves thin over multiple games in the same genre.

It seems rather obvious when said like this however for a period, this had escaped me so thanks for bringing it back into perspective to those who were there. After all, Oddysee only became successful originally because we began by having our roots firmly in Star citizen alone.

To that end the main points of this topic were:

  • Core games in Major Genres (Ark for Survival, Black desert for MMO Fantasy and Star Citizen as the obvious for MMO Sci-Fi etc as they currently stand)
  • Polls on the Website – A point that couldn’t be stressed enough by the group, currently feedback is very limited to one on one conversations and discussions within the Discord. Though this is good for Qualitative data, it makes it a much more drawn out process to get Quantitative data.
  • When running game nights, begin by spending the first hour or two playing casual browser based games such as Town of Salem and Cards against humanity.

Becoming an Officer in the future

Being an Officer (or anyone on admin for that matter) within Oddysee can sometimes be a thankless Job. A lot of it is based upon voluntarily giving up personal time and resources for the benefit of the community. To that end becoming an Officer within the group is both seen as a huge responsibility and a show of status within the group.

A lot of the people who you see on the Admin team within the group have become a part of it through dedication towards providing a better experience for the group as an overall. This was done through personal contribution of their time towards the group prior to them becoming officers. Up until now Officers were chosen based upon the administrations observations of the individuals as well as recommendations coming from within the team itself.

To them I have endless gratitude because without them, we would not have made it this far. Go Team.

From the meeting itself, there were the following points brought up:

  • Currently it is uncertain for members to identify which officers are in charge of what, an updated website with information in regards to the team should exist such as a team page showing all officers in Oddysee and what they do.
  • Officers potentially being split into two subcategories:
    • Officers who are game guru’s
    • Officers who know certain area’s
  • Officers when being chosen should be chosen based on the following criteria:
    • Easily approachable
    • How they’ve behaved in the past (actions they’ve taken in the past)
    • Able to prioritize
  • Officers should continue to be chosen the way they have been up til this point (merit based), with the potential for other members to nominate an officer

Where we are now… where we could be.

When going over this topic the main thoughts were that being of a bad flow of information. A lot of members who were present at the meeting simply had no idea what the channels of communication were for Oddysee. Though all of the information on everything that goes on within Oddysee past, present and future is all accessible to the members, it seems a key point that was being made was that it was convoluted to find that information.

With that said, in summary the main points of the meeting were as follows;

  • Website needs an overhaul, namely;
    • Discord information on main page so that members and potential new members drop by they are able to see a list of people active within the group.
    • News and information on the main page, rather than having to navigate through to the news and content page, have information included on the main page to be easily accessed and viewed.
  • MOAR *ahem* More integrated website tools (polls, group finder)

Member involvement and happiness

For this particular topic aside from what had already been mentioned throughout the meeting (better channels for information delivery to the group, website feature requests), the biggest push as stated by a large majority was for more organised social events. This is not necessarily in the form of Game nights, but for organised group events like the Community Forum that transpired.

To this end, get together’s like those for a more casual environment will attempt to be pushed every two to four weeks (though the forum itself will only occur bi-monthly, unless a huge push from you guys to do it more frequently). We have also culled quite a few of the text channels in alignment with ‘Core’ games that Oddysee partakes in whilst adding in a channel specifically for Event announcements. This would allow (general) announcements to be separated from  event announcements, allowing for easier tracking of events coming up!

What is Oddysee missing to make it your main go to group?

I think everyone myself including myself were ready to call it a end by the time we got to this section, but we persevered! By the time we had achieved this point of the meeting, we had pretty much covered all that we could in regards to this within the meeting.

The key takeaway point:

  • Coming back to the state of information flow, the main point that people mentioned was people wanted to know more information in regards to other members. Mainly
    • What kind of games do they play
    • How do I get in contact with them
    • What time do they play (Timezone)

Which, in itself comes back to the excellent package that is being developed by our resident Dev team. *hats off to you Skoma, Ryu, Demonseed and Darktofu.* We hope that once everything within the website gets finalised and the tools get finished, that it will make the experience much better, for all of you!

//Closing//

Phew, what a big at the Helm. I must say, the meeting went incredibly well, I think we as a group managed to actually get quite a bit covered whilst maintaining a steady Oddysee level of banter. To those that could make it excellent and thank you for being there again. Without you there, the meeting would’ve been a flop.

We have got a lot planned in store for you over the next few weeks, months, new moons, years :), so for those of you who read this and take part in the community actively. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, you guys are what make the community great and what makes it worth it for me to try to keep persevering to make sure this is the best damn community out there.

Remember, if you know someone who isn’t subscribed to the newsletter or know’s about our communication flows, help a fellow Oddball out.

With all that said, I am signing off, til next months at the Helm! or… well, when I see you on Discord.

Kind regards

Cykhat
