Can’t wait for 2.4!
As I probably mentioned last month, one of the things the guys over at RSI have been pounding hard on is the whole “buying-storing-selling” mechanic. It might sound like a simple thing, but when scaled to hundreds of thousands of players storing thousands of things in hundreds of various locations, it can quickly become a logistical nightmare and has brought some of the best MMOs to their knees trying to hash it all out. Soon though, it sounds like they’re going to release the first iteration of economy into the game in the 2.4 patch, along with a way to earn up in game currency.
This is extremely important for Star Citizen’s development because it’s the mechanic that’s going to drive most people to actually play the game. It’s the “reward” system that marks a persistent measure of your character’s progress aside from how good you are in a dogfight or other leaderboard statistic. Granted, this currency is going to be a temporary and fickle thing, which will most likely get wiped periodically as they get the “balance right” and all the in-game “gold sinks” in place to control it (like paying insurance premiums for losing your ship), but it’ll be fun to finally play for something and do some in-game shopping.
On another note, I decided to spend some REC and outfit my Saber with four gimbled Strife Mass Drivers and I wasn’t disappointed. I got into a fight with another player and managed to blow off another chunk of his ship with each pass. If you haven’t, check them out here.
Additionally, there will be an OddFight being held on the 14th so be sure to come fly with us, and finally, Voß, Woodhaus and I have been doing a semi-monthly podcast chatting in general about games and such. I believe there’s a link to them in this newsletter for you all to check out if you don’t mind hearing us drone on about games and the gaming industry. That’s it for this month. Catch you all in the ‘verse! Demonseed out.
