//Welcome Back//
Welcome to another episode of “At the helm”. On last week’s episode Vegeta and Goku were going head to head… oh, wrong topic. Well, we’re up to issue 7 of our newsletter already, half an year passes by quick! During this weeks “At the Helm”, I’ll be speaking mainly about the Community managers and Event managers in a bit more depth. We haven’t had much happening as of late other than seeing some growth so I believe this is the best topic to discuss.
//Community Manager and Event manager positions//
So last Newsletter, we discussed some new positions that would be opening up for the community as a whole (rather than being focused on a particular game). This is to help me (balance my workload) and you, the members as a way to ensure that chat and the community are held to the best quality. It’s fairly straightforward, the community managers are there to ensure that you all feel safe whilst participating in our community whether it be through chats or otherwise, whilst Event managers are there to setup events to get you Ladies and Gentleman to participate in so that you all have something you can do as part of the community.
//Community Managers//
We’ve had a lot of interest for this position, (perhaps a bit too much), as such I’ve had to evaluate who might be a good fit for the position. My judgement on those who will become community managers are based on the following criteria:
- How well adversity has been dealt with in the past
- Dedication to the group (How active, contributions so far that is non monetary)
- The ability to remove themselves from a argument and approach it in a logical fashion.
It’s a big job, and it will probably grow to be the biggest job within the community that is not involved with Oddysee in a particular game. Community managers themselves will be responsible for the day to day running of the community as a whole, Helping out the Event managers to market events and let people know and resolving any disputes (of which they are not a part of) between members.
Community managers will not have any direct say on how Oddysee will be run in a particular game, however they will act as intermediaries/middle ground should an argument arise. Remember they are there to ensure that all members are having fun and feel safe, so if you get called out by them it’s definitely because they’ve evaluated it to be against our ideology.
By Next issue we will have these guys announced and confirmed!
How do Officers and Community Managers interact?
The whole point of community managers is to take a lot of the extra burden off of the officers which has been placed upon them. I admit, I’m at fault here as it is outside of the scope that they might have signed up for and is due to my aspirations as we did start off purely as a group for Star Citizen as Oddysee has evolved I have been late in relieving them of these extra duties however, I hope to make amends to that with these positions. Hato_Hero and Lord Corwin have been doing an excellent job of doing most of these issues up til this point and I believe they are up for the challenge of the extra responsibilities.
All well and good however I haven’t yet answered the rights and privileges that Officers have vs the Community Managers. Officers will at the end of the day to the community at large be other members (albeit members who have shown the ability to run and handle the group within their game), this means that when in the game that they are in charge of, the officers say goes, they have those positions for a reason.
Should you however have a issue within the community itself, as in personal attacks or you have felt discriminated against or something similar, this is where the community manager steps in and ensures that the issue is dealt with in the most appropriate manner.
So to summarize, ingame the officers have the say on what should be done, as they are the ones playing the game they are aware of the issues and mechanics at play, they do not have the ability to moderate the community as a whole, as it is outside their job description.
“What if I have a complaint a certain person within the group within a certain game?” This is a grey area, however it should be handled in the way of getting in contact with the officers within the game first and foremost and trying to resolve it through that way. Should you however feel that what was the result was not something you are happy with, get in contact with a community manager to act as a external entity.
To summarize, Community Managers could be considered the Human Resources department of a company, they are there to ensure everyone is receiving fair treatment.
//Event Managers//
Unfortunately, we have received very little interest for these positions, so if you’re interested, please get in contact with me as soon as possible as these positions are still open!
It surprises me the lack of interest these positions have generated as I believe them to be one of the more fun ones of the administration of the organisation, though in our requirements the body of the requirements are longer they are pretty simple. The main responsibility is to create and run events once a month, this can be either streaming events, game events, content creation etc. The reason this is such an important position is it will allow for you to host game events that you believe the community and yourself would enjoy.
Some of the events we’ve had in the past include:
- Launch events
- Star Citizen Arena commander fights (Oddfights)
- Giveaways
The possibilities are endless. Once again please get in contact with me if you’re interested.
//Closing//
With that, it brings us to the end of this issues At the helm, if you enjoyed the read and would like me to focus on something different for next issue or have any questions, please get in contact with me through Discord/Steam etc.
Kind regards
Cykhat
